Abstract:
Background: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) involves progressive irreversible loss of kidney function and is mostly managed with advanced life-sustaining treatment like dialysis. Yet mortality rates are as high as 19-24% for individuals with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) on dialysis. Self-management is the personal capability to control the symptoms, treatment side-effects, physical outcomes, socio-mental effects, and all other disease-related changes in lifestyle, but is mostly inadequate for most patients. Aim and objectives: To assess the level of knowledge regarding self-health management and stress among patients undergoing haemodialysis. Methodology: A Quantitative research approach with a non-experimental descriptive design was adopted to assess the level of knowledge among 30 haemodialysis patients who fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria using a non-probability convenient sampling technique from the selected setting. A structured knowledge questionnaire and a structured 5-point Likert scale were used to assess the level of knowledge regarding self-health management and the level of stress respectively, among patients undergoing haemodialysis. Result: The findings revealed that 20.00%, 36.67% and 43.33% of the patients undergoing haemodialysis had adequate, moderately adequate and inadequate knowledge respectively, regarding self-health management; 10.00%, 73.33% and 16.67% had mild, moderate and severe stress level, respectively. A very highly statistically significant fair negative correlation was identified between the mean knowledge and stress scores and a statistically significant level of association was identified between the selected background variables namely demographic, personal and clinical variables with the level of knowledge and stress. Conclusion: Hence, the investigators recommended that educational awareness programme can be conducted among haemodialysis patients to empower them with more efficient adaptation to the treatment regimen, limit further complications and enhance their overall quality of life.
